Little Readers Rocked

Little Readers Rock took place on Saturday, April 9th at the Hillary Rodham Clinton Children’s Library.  In the second year for the event, we made a few changes based on what we learned from the first year. First, the committee changed the event start time from 10 a.m. to 9 a.m. to accommodate schedules of families with young children.  Second, the committee made the event open to the public.

The event was promoted to various media outlets and event calendars. With these two changes, the number of attendees this year grew enormously. More than 400 children and adults attended the event!

In the League, we hold ourselves accountable by consistently measuring and evaluating the effectiveness of our programs. There is no way to measure how excited the kids were, but the looks on their faces was proof that we achieved our goal of making Little Readers Rock a literacy celebration.

The event featured several unique activities:

  • Reading to pet therapy dogs
  • Pictures with Clifford the Big Red Dog
  • A greenhouse tour (where children saw a Venus fly trap eating a roly poly)
  • A captivating storyteller
  • Picking out books to take home

The Little Readers Rock Committee is a group of hardworking, creative, professional volunteers. Each committee member contributed their talents, ideas, personal connections, and several hours outside of monthly meetings to assemble board books, count thousands of books, put together snack bags, create a new craft, run numerous errands, and wrap gifts for donations.

This year’s committee includes: Angela Brown, Dana Coburn, Eliza Gaines, Elizabeth Webb, Amberlie Jones, Sarah Gibson, Allison Koonce, Caitlin McNally, Clarice Partee, Andrea McDaniel, Olivia Ramsey, Susi Taylor, Jann Winchester, Ashley Driver, Courtney Boeckmann, and Courtney Black.
